Day 25: This One Change Doubled Engagement
A simple click trigger in an early email drove strong engagement for years.
Welcome to Day 25 of the 30 Days of Growth. This is a pop-up newsletter put together by Chenell from Growth In Reverse. I've pulled 30 creators together to help give one short, actionable way you can either grow or improve your email list.
Allea Grummert, the founder of Duett, helps creators build email systems that turn new subscribers into loyal readers and buyers.
One of her favorite strategies is using click triggers inside early emails to help segment readers and deliver content they’re most likely to care about.
🔍 How Allea Did It
For a client in the recipe and food space, they sent an onboarding email that includes links to several topics they cover.
They would get 3 options to click:
I’m new to cooking
I’m familiar with cooking
I’m an expert at cooking
If a subscriber clicks on one specific link – say, “I’m new to cooking” – Allea’s automation adds them to a custom onboarding sequence for beginner-level content.
That new reader then receives 5 emails tailored to their skill level, written to meet them where they are. After that, they automatically join the general nurture sequence everyone else receives.
An advanced cook doesn’t need to get content around super basic stuff and vice versa.
This approach is driven entirely by clicks inside the emails readers are already opening.
This allows her client to send the right message at the right time, based on real behavior, not assumptions.
It’s simple, right? But wait for the results.
📊 Results
65% open rate on the personalized follow-up emails
19% click-through rate on those personalized sequences vs the general welcome sequence which was around 10%.
This sequence was active for over 4 years with consistently high performance
Better subscriber segmentation led to stronger engagement across the board
🧠 Why It Works
Tailored content increases relevance and trust.
Boosts open and click rates by sending topic-specific follow-ups. And clearly almost doubling their click through rate, these emails were engaging people early on in their relationship with the creator.
Improves conversion paths before readers enter the general nurture flow
Can be done without complex quiz funnels or extra friction. Kit and Beehiiv can do this natively.
💡 How You Can Implement It
Choose 1 or 2 core interest areas your audience cares about. These can map to services, topics, or specific subscriber needs.
Add relevant links in your welcome or early nurture emails. For example: “If you’re new to [topic], check out this quickstart guide.”
Use link triggers to assign subscribers to a short follow-up series. Deliver 2–5 emails focused on the thing they clicked.
Make it feel seamless. No need for fancy funnels, just smart link placement and helpful follow-up.
After the sequence, add them back to your main content flow. That way, they get personalized help first, and then join the broader list.
💡 If you’re enjoying this series, would you mind taking a second to let me know? 🙂
🛠️ Tools
Kit or Beehiiv to help with setting up these click triggers.
Personalization doesn’t need to be complicated. One smart link can turn a generic sequence into a reader’s favorite email series.
